This year he’s adding a new chapter: contract farmer at Aberlin Springs, a self-styled farm-to-table housing development 45 minutes outside the city that includes a deluxe model SPIN farm and a guaranteed market of 100+ residents who have bought into the local food movement big-time. Ryan is head farmer there, and he’ll be increasing his land base to 60,000 sq. ft (about an acre and a half), and more than doubling his revenue. With 5 sales channels, two assistant farmers and a knack for creating his own sales channels, Ryan is showing how to build a viable farm business when you don’t pigeon-hole yourself as an urban farmer.
